A Notary Public is an official- typically appointed by the Secretary of State- who serves the public as an impartial witness in performing a variety of fraud-deterrent acts related to the signing of important documents. Notaries are officials of integrity, with each commissioned notary undergoing a background check prior to being appointed to carry out their duties. 

While it is possible for an attorney to also be a commissioned notary, any commissioned notary who is not an attorney is not authorized to provide certain advice or services. Failure to adhere to such restrictions is known as the Unlawful Practice of Law and could result in serious consequences for the notary, up to and including jail time.

 

As much as Safe Sign Mobile notaries may want to assist, there are some actions that are strictly prohibited and illegal to offer when providing notarial services. These offenses include, but are not limited to

• Giving advice about a document a customer needs.
• Recommending the type of notarization required.
• Offering an opinion about the legality or effect of a document.
